A beautiful island with both a heroic and dark past, Sullivan’s Island is an eclectic mix of the old and the new, with old weather worn beach homes mixing with ultramodern and luxurious mansions. Just seven nautical miles to the north of Charleston, primary access to the island is from Mount Pleasant across the historic Ben Sawyer drawbridge. A laid-back residential oasis, the commercial district of this three-mile-long island is a mere one-block long and comprised primarily of seafood restaurants.

The site of one of the first major battles of the Revolutionary War, Sullivan’s Island bears the name of Captain Florence O’Sullivan, captain of one of the first ships bringing settlers to establish Charleston in 1670 and later the island’s lighthouse keeper. For his services, Sullivan was granted the island that bears his name as well as large portions of what is now Mount Pleasant. A community rich in history in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, it was the site of a June 28, 1776, battle in which Colonel William Moultrie and his command of Colonial militia held firm against a British onslaught in a fort that was still under construction.

The Battle of Sullivan’s Island not only stalled British advances for a significant time, it also became a defining moment for the young Colonial army. Fort Moultrie went on to serve the nation until its closure in the 1940s. Its most noted alumni was Edgar Allen Poe, who was stationed there in 1827 and 1828 and used the island as a setting in several of his works.
