One of downtown Charleston’s larger neighborhoods, Harleston Village is inviting to any homebuyer wanting a great central location. Homes here are close to the shops and restaurants of historic King Street, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Taking up more than 50 blocks of downtown Charleston, the neighborhood is bordered to its north and south, respectively, by Calhoun and Broad streets and by King Street on the east. Dating to the late 1700s, the village sits on what were once tidal creeks that were used to power the city’s rice and cotton mills. Over time, the creeks were filled in for houses, and the neighborhood was the first pick of many prominent Charlestonians who built some of the city’s most impressive homes.
In 1786, the village formed the first golf club in the country. The area features a number of the city’s most popular parks. Moultrie Park offers tennis courts with lights for night play, basketball court, sports field and playground. Colonial Lake was created from a tidal pool in the late 1890s and today is a popular spot for runners and walkers. Two of Charleston’s top private schools – Charleston Day and Mason Preparatory – are also located in the village.
