Darrell Creek might be on the outskirts of Mount Pleasant now, but just wait. Mount Pleasant has a way of catching up fast. Doubling in size between 1990 and 2000, the state’s fourth largest city has grown another 41 percent since then to stand at 67,843 in the 2010 census. Located in the city’s northern stretches, Darrell Creek will be a community of 291 homes when built out along the banks of the deep-water creek of the same name and the Wando River.

For homebuyers, the community offers a number of advantages, the biggest being they can typically get more home for their money distanced from the city center. Then again, the “boonies” are just 13 miles from the foot of the Ravenel Bridge and less than half an hour away from Isle of Palm beaches. Wando High School is just off the entrance road to Darrell Creek and the new Roper St. Francis Hospital is less than three miles away.

Residents also benefit from a neighboring development’s commercial areas without having to sacrifice their own community’s serenity. A “smartgrowth” community, the adjoining 1,700-acre Carolina Park is designed to give its residents the opportunity to live, work, play and shop within its bounds. As part of that plan, Carolina Park offers two integrated commercial districts with grocery stores, banks, national and local retailers, entertainment venues, restaurants and professional services.

Like Mount Pleasant, Darrell Creek’s developers also looked to the future when planning the community. With a location well off the U.S. 17 corridor and generous half to full-acre lots, the community is buffered against the area’s inevitable urbanization. Homes range from 3,800 to 5,200 square feet in size with most home sites overlooking marshes, the creek or river. Homes and vacant lots are available, including many with docks. Home prices range from the mid-$400s to $1 million plus. Most homebuyers will be pleasantly surprised at how much more their dollars will buy compared to other Charleston real estate.
